Room to Grow
Ideas for graduating from empty nest to full potential.
It’s well known that a house can feel empty pretty soon after a child moves out. But rather than letting your house collect dust or become a “temporary” storage space, now is the perfect time to start thinking about new ways to use that spare room.
Creative space
However you express your creative side -- with paint, fabric, yarn, jewelry, paper, models or music -- you have likely accumulated a lot of supplies, materials and tools along the way. Give yourself the gift of a dedicated space, with appropriate storage, so that you can spend more time making and enjoying your favourite activity and less time searching and shifting. Good lighting is a must.
Home gym
Depending on the size of the room, and your budget, there are a number of ways to customize a personal workout space. While a treadmill might be the default home gym piece of equipment, it’s large, can be expensive and has an air of permanence. Purchasing a small number of free weights, exercise bands and medicine balls, as well as floor mats might be a better option if you’re looking for a varied workout experience. Oh, and don’t forget the TV! Many personal fitness trainers have workouts you can stream online to keep you on track and motivated.
Closet/laundry room
Many older homes have limited closet space and basement laundry rooms (usually the farthest point from the source of most of your laundry -- your bedrooms). Converting a bedroom into a walk-in closet or laundry room can address these challenges. Add a full-length mirror, shelves, and a comfy chair to create the best closet. For a laundry room consider adding a folding station and ironing board.
Games room
Do you enjoy jigsaw puzzles or bridge? Perhaps your family has epic Monopoly games, or you have grandchildren who would love to play with the model train set that’s been packed away in the garage for years. A good games room needs a table at the right height for your pastime of choice, adjustable lighting, comfortable seating and a warm, inviting atmosphere.
However you decide to use a newly available room in your home, it’s worthwhile to take the time and effort to make it a comfortable and pleasing environment. An inviting décor, good lighting, comfortable seating and suitable storage are all key elements in creating a space where you will enjoy spending time.
